Although Dan Dyer's musical career has taken him from Austin, Texas to New York City and back again to Austin to record his new album,it is drenched in a deep southern, swampy, gospel soul sound that is more hot, humid, New Orleans night than a sound associated with either of those cities. A sound typified by artists like The Neville Brothers or Dr John, whose Walk On Gilded Splinters Dan does a smoldering cover on the new self titled disc. Never fearing to embrace his influences, Dan is no imitator, his smooth, soulful voice stakes it's own place in keeping a genre alive for a new generation.

Some new music today from C.W. Stoneking or maybe I should say new old music. The music could just as easily be from the deep south in the 20's or 30's but it's not, it's brand new music being made in the land down under in Melbourne, Australia. Stoneking has captured with such authenticity the gritty storytelling blues style of a time now long past that you'd swear Alan Lomax was there with his field recorder capturing it.

Bio:
Born to American parents in Katherine, Northern Territory, in 1974, CW was raised in the Aboriginal community of Papunya, (about 240 km northwest of Alice Springs). After his parents separated early on, his musical father raised him whilst teaching in the settlements. “I used to hear a lot of records from my dad with a lot of the 60s vocal groups from the States and things like that. He used to sing tunes with the guitar for me at bedtime when I was very small, like ‘Candyman’, and ‘Froggie Went a’Courtin’.”
It wasn’t until after he moved to Balmain in Sydney aged 11 that Stoneking began learning guitar. His interest in the blues was sparked as a teenager after stumbling across some tapes of two country-blues legends; Blind Willie McTell and Memphis Minnie.

This festival celebrates the alternative and punk blues sound as well as the modern juke joint music of the Deep South with bands from 18 states as well as Italy, Australia, Canada, and the UK.

Due to the expansion and popularity of the festival, the new location is the Washington County Fairgrounds by Lake Elmo, on the East Side of Minneapolis/St Paul, MN. The bigger venue accommodates the additional acts and anticipated larger crowds. Two stages side by side allows for continuous music throughout the three days. Tickets are now on sale and this unique event is once again drawing music lovers from across the country and overseas including France, England, and Australia.

The Deep Blues sound connects the cutting edge and the future of the genre to the deepest roots of its past. Like the music of the great original blues artists, it is raw, immediate, unfiltered, authentic and entirely organic. The Deep Blues Festival represents a generation - or two - of
artists, who are part of a groundswell making its way to the mainstream, where signs of its influence are already visible.

The film festival, which features many music-related films, is free and open to the public at the fairgrounds throughout the weekend. Highlights include Max Shore's "Hill Country Troubadour" and J.D. Wilke's "Seven Signs."

The Deep Blues Festival prides itself in being a "fan friendly" event.

Free parking, affordable ticket prices and concessions, no ticket service fees, and plenty of room for the fans are guaranteed.

Something new to start your Monday off. Hailing from Oxford, Mississippi, John Barrett's Bass Drum Of Death consists of John Barrett playing an assortment of instruments himself- guitar, bass drum, vocals, shaker, tambourine, etc. It's a raw, rootsy, footstomping, hand clapping, blend of music that's as rooted in the traditional blues like Robert Johnson or Elmore James as it is in the current wave of artists like The White Stripes or The Black Keys.

John recorded these songs himself and is releasing them free via his myspace page as well as selling them on cassette at his live shows. Check out his myspace for some more and be sure catch him out playing live somewhere near you.

There's a new R&B Soul revolution going on with the likes of Sharon Jones & The Dap Kings, Ryan Shaw, Amy Winehouse and others being the current torchbearers. Well, you can add Eli "Paperboy" Reed & The True Loves to that evergrowing list, their new album Roll With You is being released April 29th on Q Division records and is sure to be an instant soul classic.

Eli Reed's story:
Eli Reed grew up listening to his music critic father’s collection of gospel, blues, country, soul, and R&B records and eventually taught himself to play guitar, piano, and harmonica. Then, at age 18, he got a first-hand education when he moved to Clarksdale, MS, one of the birthplaces of the blues, in the North Mississippi Delta, where he sang and played guitar with various soul, R&B, and blues bands at local clubs, and received informal lessons in performing from legendary blues drummer Sam Carr.
“I learned a lot about singing because the audiences are very tough,” says Reed, whose has both a spine-tingling soul scream and a pleading falsetto in his vocal arsenal. “You really have to be on your game just to be able to last the night. If you’re going to perform for three or four hours, you’ve got to have stamina.” After spending nine months in Mississippi, Reed enrolled at the University of Chicago and got himself a gig singing and playing piano on the city’s South Side at a church run by former Chess Records’ soul singer-turned-minister Mitty Collier, using the $50 a week he earned to buy records for his college radio show.

In 2004, after a year of school, Reed returned to Boston and began to assemble the True Loves, which has undergone several line-up changes in the last three years, but now features Mike Montgomery (bass), Ryan Spraker (guitar), Paul Jones (tenor sax), Ben Jaffe (tenor sax), Patriq Moody (trumpet), and Andy Bauer (drums). Reed self-released an album of soul covers and originals, entitled Eli “Paperboy” Reed Sings Walkin’ and Talkin’ and the band played out all over the Northeast, earning glowing praise from the local press. The Boston Phoenix called Reed “a gifted young singer and guitarist,” while the Boston Globe raved about Reed’s “authentic and sincere music and vision,” calling him “a consummate musician.”

Here's a couple of hot tracks for you that I received in my inbox last week, from the posthumously released new record by Sterling Harrison. There's not a lot of information about Sterling out on the web that I could find to write something informative, so here's Mark Deming's take from the allmusic guide:

Sterling Harrison was a journeyman soul singer who cut his first record in 1955 and spent years on the road, playing clubs across the country and frequently opening for bigger names. Eventually, Harrison ended up in Los Angeles, where he sang at hole-in-the-wall bars and soul food joints on the city's south side through most of the '80s and '90s. Harrison cut a handful of records over the years for labels both big and small, most of which didn't indicate he was anything special, but a tiny handful of fans were of the opinion he was the greatest unknown soul singer on Earth, and in 2001 a few of them decided to help Harrison make the album they knew he was capable of. And it turns out those fans were right on the money; produced by Los Lobos saxman Steve Berlin and comedy writer and soul music maven Eddie Gorodetsky, South of the Snooty Fox is a revelation, a thrilling set of raw but accomplished old-school R&B that suggests at the dawn of the 21st century Harrison may have been the finest exponent of the music's classic style alive. While Harrison's voice is remarkable enough — a strong baritone that could slide into a clear falsetto or a rumbling bass at will — it was his sense of phrasing and showman's ability to fill a song with energy and sheer belief that really sets him apart, and hearing him strut through a set of lesser-known R&B classics such as "You Left the Water Running," "There's a Rat Loose in My House" and "I'll Take Care of You" with the swagger and spunk of a 20-year-old is enough to turn nearly anyone into a believer. (A moving cover of Tom Waits' "The House Where Nobody Lives" shows he was just as adept with newer material.) Nearly as remarkable is the accompaniment by Harrison's live band, the New Breed Band, who are dazzlingly tight and funky throughout. Given Harrison's failure to catch a break throughout his career, it's sad but appropriate that shortly after he finished work on South of the Snooty Fox, the singer was diagnosed with cancer, as was his excellent lead guitar player Larry Johnson, and both passed away in 2005 while the album sank into limbo. Thankfully, Hacktone Records has seen fit to give South of the Snooty Fox a long belated release, and anyone who has a taste for classic soul owes it to themselves to give it a spin — it may have taken 45 years, but when he cut these sessions Harrison finally got to show the world what he was could do, and it's pretty wonderful stuff. - Mark Deming, allmusic.com

Today for the Monday Morning Blues a taste of the worn and weary soulful voice of Ted Hawkins. A voice that really conveys the emotions of life's highs and lows like few others.

Ted Hawkins was an American singer/songwriter, born in Biloxi, Mississippi in 1936 and died in 1995.
Hawkins was an enigmatic figure through most of his career; he split his time between his adopted hometown of Venice Beach, California where he was a mostly-anonymous street performer, and Europe, where he and his songs were better-known and well-received in clubs and small concert halls.
Born into a poor family in Mississippi, Hawkins lived a difficult early life, ending up at a reform school by age 12, and drifting, hitching, and stealing his way across the country for the next dozen years, earning several stays in prison including a 3-year stint for stealing a leather jacket as a teenager. Along the way, he picked up a love of music and a talent for the guitar. "I was sent to a school for bad boys called Oakley Training School in 1949," from a brief piece of autobiography he wrote. "There I developed my voice by singing with a group that the superintendent's wife had got together." After reform school, he ended up in the state penitentiary and was released at 19. "Then I heard a singer whose name was Sam Cooke. His voice did something to me." For the next ten years or so he drifted in and out of trouble around the country, living in Chicago, Buffalo, Philadelphia, and Newark. In the middle of the mid-1960s folk music boom Hawkins set out for California to try for a professional singing career. He recorded several tunes without commercial success, worked at odd jobs, and took up busking along the piers and storefronts of Venice Beach as a way to supplement his income. Hawkins made ends meet by developing a small following of locals and tourists who would come to hear this southern black man, sitting on an overturned milk-crate, play blues and folk standards as well as a few original tunes in his signature open guitar tuning and raspy vocal style (Hawkins claimed the rasp in his voice came from the damage done by years of singing in the sand and spray of the boardwalk).

Elmore James was one of the true pioneers of electric slide guitar whose influence san still be heard in modern day players for the Allman Brothers to The White Stripes.

No two ways about it, the most influential slide guitarist of the postwar period was Elmore James, hands down. Although his early demise from heart failure kept him from enjoying the fruits of the '60s blues revival as his contemporaries Muddy Waters and Howlin' Wolf did, James left a wide influential trail behind him. And that influence continues to the present time — in approach, attitude and tone — in just about every guitar player who puts a slide on his finger and wails the blues. As a guitarist, he wrote the book, his slide style influencing the likes of Hound Dog Taylor, Joe Carter, his cousin Homesick James and J.B. Hutto, while his seldom-heard single-string work had an equally profound effect on B.B. King and Chuck Berry. His signature lick — an electric updating of Robert Johnson's "I Believe I'll Dust My Broom" and one that Elmore recorded in infinite variations from day one to his last session — is so much a part of the essential blues fabric of guitar licks that no one attempting to play slide guitar can do it without being compared to Elmore James. Others may have had more technique — Robert Nighthawk and Earl Hooker immediately come to mind — but Elmore had the sound and all the feeling.
