A refreshing batch of songs that are an all out mix of country, rock, noise, psychedelia, and the kitchen sink, often all at once. Just when your ears think they've got the influence pegged, the whole sonic world shifts. Devil's A-Go-Go lays out the plan with it's scratchy guitars, prog rock drum changes and even a mariachi horn break and the album never lets up from there, a stylistic whirlwind that's equal parts warm familiarity and disorienting juxtaposition. The title track's Neil Young meets Pavement sound could easily be a long lost Wilco track,if Wilco hadn't decided to play it safe and lose their edge. Wild Mtn Jam is the Louvin Brothers on an acid bender, while Murder Babe is a noisy pop gem that would make Alex Chilton proud. The lilting Summer Town and Country Caravan show they know how to slow it down as well.

Blitzen Trapper kicks off a summer tour this Thursday in their hometown of Portland, Oregon and is coming soon to melt the paint off the walls of your local rock club. Be sure to check them out when they hit your town.

The Pains of Being Pure At Heart are three piece band from New York City consiting of Alex Naidus on Bass,Kip Berman on Guitar and Vocals, and Peggy Wang-East on Keyboard and Vocals. Their music is an irresistable blend of driving rhythms,melodic noisy guitars and reverb drenched boy-girl vocals. Think the noise of Jesus and Mary Chain with the melodic flair of Teenage Fanclub and some female vocals thrown in there and you'll have an idea. The band recently released a limited edition CD3 single for their song This Love is Fucking Right, available on Cloudberry Records and are currently working on a new EP, from which they were kind enough to hook me up with a couple just finished tracks for you all.

Reviewer #10 from Mrs. Doyles's 8th Grade Class has this to say upon hearing two tracks from the new White Rabbits album

Well I'm not sure which two songs Mrs. Doyle's class got to listen to, but there's a handful of really grooving tracks on the new White Rabbits debut disc, Fort Nightly. Overall, it only really hits it right about half of the time but when it does, it struts along like The Killers with a sense of swagger.

Check out the opening track Kid On My Shoulders with it's propulsive keyboard rhythm part and staccatto guitars and try not to dance along. I 've had this one on repeat all weekend long.

Today in 2000, Rapper Nate Dogg was arrested for allegedly kidnapping his girlfriend from her mother's house, holding her against her will, assaulting her and setting a car on fire. All charges were later dismissed.

Bitter Bitter Weeks - Lo-res

This past Tuesday saw the release of the excellent new disc from Philadelphia's Bitter Bitter Weeks, Peace Is Burning Like A River. The first two Bitter Bitter Weeks records were essentially solo records by Brian McTear. For this disc the he wanted to develop a more complex and orchestrated sound and enlisted supporting musicians and featured guest performances by members of Mazarin, Apollo Sunshine, The A-sides, BC Camplight, The Velvet Crush and more. The result is reminiscient of the powerful jangly sounds emanating from the deep south in the 80's from bands like REM, Let's Active, and The Db's.

A trio fronted by Brooklyn via Argentina cello player Pablo Cubarle, Contramano's music is a raw and powerful blend of alternative indie rock and precussive Latin rhythms. Imagine the sound of throwing the Talking Heads, The Pixies, Cold War Kids and Los Lonely Boys all together and you'll start to get an idea of what they sound like.

Sometimes it's good to be on "The List". Last night's LCD Soundsystem show at The TLA(Fillmore) in Philadelphia was a freebie sponsored by myspace's "The List". All of the tickets were given away free via a myspace contest. Local radio station Y-Rock also gave some away. The free tickets insured the place was packed as Myspace was filming the entire concert to be placed on the web later. Considering it was a myspace giveaway the crowd was a good mix of all ages not overly skewed towards myspace's younger demographic. Doors opened at 8:00 but LCD didn't hit the stage until approximately 9:15 and they played until about 10:30. Just over an hour, but the energy level was insane through the whole thing. As electronic as they may sound there's no drum machines, they play all of it with a full band and let me tell you they know how to rock. I'd say the highlights were the faster more rocking version Daft Punk Is Playing At My House, All My Friends, which was absolutely transcendent live far superior to the album version,and Yeah which had the entire crowd going nuts and singing along.
The Joy Division cover in the encore was also very cool to get All in all a great show, definitely worth catching if they come your way. Except for a handful of US shows most of their upcoming tour dates are in Europe and beyond.

Today's completely random song of the day is a slice of new wave power pop from 1980 from the band Quincy. Quincy hailed from the Philadelphia area and was fronted by the brothers Stephen and Brian Butler.
The band recorded one excellent LP for Columbia in 1980. Just as they were starting to gain some notoriety, Quincy Jones saw the name "Quincy" on the marquee at the Whiskey A Go Go in Los Angeles and slapped them with a cease and desist order. Quincy was not allowed to use their name anymore. Using the ill advised new moniker Lulu Temple they never regained the momentum they were starting to build and eventually broke up.

In 1985 the Butler brothers regrouped with a new band called Smash Palace that is currently still performing.

Monument is the second disc, and first full length from Washington DC's CITY-STATE and follows up their critically lauded 2006 EP, Wolves + 4. CITY-STATE's sound is dramatic soaring vocals on a foundation of dark rhythmic drums and bass, surrounded by epic reverb laden guitars and keyboards. Like the contemporaries such as Interpol, British Sea Power and Coldplay they cite as influences, they too create an updated version of the Joy Division/U2/Cure influenced sound of late 80's bands such as The Church,The Mighty Lemondrops, or The Catherine Wheel.

The production on the disc is top notch and complements the songs beautifully. The intricate soundscapes they create here have an elegant yet massive sound. I could easily picture them playing these songs to a stadium full of people under the stars.

Last night I went to see Philadelphia band The Peace Creeps and near the end of their set they played a blistering version of The Jackson 5 classic, I Want You Back.
