A couple weeks back for 5 On A Friday I posted some Arcade Fire covers, one of those was a amazing acapella version of Neon Bible by Operation Bumblebee.
On her blog she also regularly post videos that she has done, some of her singing, some not,all very artistic and captivating in a sort of surreal way. New Music : Birdie Busch - Penny Arcade

I'll admit it I never given Birdie Busch's first CD a listen, I'd pigeonholed her as one more generic songer songwriter without even hearing a note and never gave it a second thought. I can't compare it her first, but based on hearing her new disc Penny Arcade I'll admit I was wrong. The photo above captures her essence so perfectly. With a unique voice that falls somwhere between the child like pureness of Victoria Williams and the Appalachian drawl of Gillian Welch, she delivers songs with a heartfelt honesty that is truly refreshing. The songs have an warm organic folky feel akin to a bunch of friends sitting around a late night party with everyone just jamming on whatever instruments they can find. Just one listen will leave songs like Go Go Gadget Heart resonating in your mind for days to come. Or check out the brilliant storytelling of The Huff Singers(North Philly). Be mesmerized by the hypnotic cover of Steve Miller's Wild Mountain Honey and so on, and so on. 13 songs worth you'll surely want to hear again. I'm converted.

LIVE: The A-Sides at World Cafe Live 9-20-07

Philadelphia's The A-Sides new album Silver Storms is a shimmering, glorious, epic sounding pop record released this past Tuesday. This afternoon they brought their equally amazing live showto the World Cafe Live for a live broadcast on WXPN.
Here's a couple pictures and a link to the archived live show on NPR's site.
Next week they embark on a tour that will bring one of Philadelphia's finest to all the corners of the country. Head on out and see it for yourself when they come your way.

TONIGHT In NYC : Artanker Convoy, MGMT + more

My apologies as the necessities of real life have made me somewhat of a blog posting slacker this week.

Artanker Convoy sent me a message earlier this week asking if I could make mention of a last minute show they just scheduled for tonight. I hadn't listened to their music before, but I gave their new cd Cozy Endings a listen and I have to say I'm really impressed and grooving on their original blend of spacey jazz oriented instrumental music. I highly recommend you check them out tonight if you're in the New York City area.

Also playing tonight is MGMT(more on MGMT by the lovely Kate at TGH here) before heading off to tour with Of Montreal for most of the fall.

It Lives and Binary Marketing Show are on the bill tonight as well.

1,2,3,4. That oh so memorable count off that anyone who's seen The Ramones knows so well. I had the privilege of seeing them some 20 or so times over the years and each and every time was just as amazing as the last. Their sets burned with a fury that bands are still trying their hardest to emulate. This new DVD set is going to be an awesome document of the live power that inspired bands like The Clash and The Sex Pistols and is still inspiring bands today.

Nine performances recorded in 1982 at the US Festival in San Bernardino, CA are also featured here in 5.1 Surround Sound. The band fires off hit after hit, blazing through "The KKK Took My Baby Away," "Gimme Gimme Shock Treatment," and "Rock 'n' Roll High School." During the show, the band also covers "Chinese Rocks," a song Dee Dee wrote, which was recorded by Johnny Thunders and The Heartbreakers.
Spanning the Ramones' entire career, the DVD follows the band from its earliest performances at CBGB, to their last international performance in Argentina. Soul Singer With Real Soul : Shelly Bhushan

If Amy Winehouse is a little too rehab-retro for you, or, like me, you were disappointed by the slick sounding mess that was Joss Stone's last record, Shelly Bhushan is right up your alley. Shelly's new record Picking Daisies is a smoldering blend of soulful jazzy funk and southern Memphis soul all anchored by her incredibly powerful voice. The emotion just pours out of the songs from the horn infused groove of Beautiful Me to the slow burning lover's lament of It's Over. Shelly even gets down to her Austin, Texas roots on the hand clapping, foot stomping, country tinged album closer ,The Nest.

Solving A Murder Mystery

Imagine if you will the scene, a high school gymnasium, plenty of crepe paper all around, a handpainted sign that says "Welcome to The Prom, 1957". Off in the corner on a small stage is a four piece band banging out the songs that have the kids up and dancing from the word go.
Now flash forward fifty years, in the corner on a small stage in a coffee shop that same exact band is playing the same exact songs and all the indie-kid caffeine junkies are loving every second of it.
That band is Murder Mystery, defining a sound that I can best describe as retro-indie. Snappy snare based drumming, lots of hand claps, poppy danceable bass lines and clean efficient guitar playing, fronted by a voice that falls somewhere between Stephin Merritt(Magnetic Fields) and Gordon Gano(Violent Femmes).
Their new album Are You Ready for the Heartache Cause Here it Comes was co-produced by J.P. Bowersock(Ryan Adams And The Cardinals,The Strokes) and is chock full of catchy boy-girl-love songs that will have you humming along, if not dancing along, at the first listen.

Murder Mystery is from New York City and is Jeremy Coleman(vocals, guitar), Adam Fels(bass,vocals) Jeremy's tap dancer turned drummer sister, Laura Coleman(drums,vocals) and Kevin Jaszek(guitar,vocals).

Monday Morning Blues : Mixed Bag

A mixed bag for you on today's Monday Morning Blues.
First up one from the mailbag with the Jeramy Norris Band. Hailing from Stockton California the band is fronted by Jeramy Norris on Guitar, Vocals, Bass with Daniel Bailey on Guitar, Vocals, Bass and Doug English on Drums. Jeramy Norris started playing blues at the age of 15 and has shared the stage with artists including, BB King, Jeff Beck, Little Charlie and the Night Cats, Robben Ford, Coco Montoya, Tommy Castro, Derek Trucks, Joe Louis Walker, Chris Cain, Ron Thompson, Los Lobos, Walter Trout, Norton Buffalo, and John Mayall.

U2 Popmart Arrives On DVD

POPMART LIVE FROM MEXICO CITY DVD RELEASE
U2’s PopMart Live from Mexico City will be released on DVD on 10th September 2007.

Filmed at the Foro Sol Autodromo in Mexico City on 3rd December 1997, PopMart Live from Mexico City was directed by David Mallet and first released on video the following year; this is the first time it has been released on DVD.

Described as a sci-fi disco supermarket, the PopMart Tour opened in its “spiritual home”, Las Vegas on 25th April 1997. All trash and kitsch, PopMart introduced a giant mirrorball lemon, a 100ft cocktail stick - complete with olive, and the works of Lichtenstein, Warhol and Haring, to a live rock audience: a production experience never quite seen before.

Originally filmed on analogue video, the film has been transferred to a digital format with re-graded and cleaned pictures. Great care has been taken to maintain the original look by simply enhancing it, with an added degree of sharpness and contrast unavailable when originally filmed. The audio has also been re-mastered and mixed in 5.1 Surround Sound.

PopMart Live from Mexico City will be available in two formats: a Standard 1-disc format containing the concert, and a Special Limited Edition 2-disc format, the 2nd bonus disc containing previously unreleased live audio and video material, including documentaries, a PopMart tour visuals montage, and DVD-ROM extras.

Hang on, HELP! is on the way

APPLE CORPS LTD PROUDLY ANNOUNCE THE DVD RELEASE OF THE BEATLES FILM ‘HELP!’, OCTOBER 30TH

Apple Corps Ltd have announced the eagerly anticipated DVD release of The Beatles’ second feature film ‘Help!’ on October 30th (October 29th ROW) which will be marketed and distributed by EMI Music.

Directed by Richard Lester, who also directed the band’s debut feature film ‘A Hard Days Night’, ‘Help!’ made its theatrical debut in 1965. The story follows The Beatles as they become passive recipients of an outside plot that revolves around Ringo's possession of a sacrificial ring, which he cannot remove from his finger. As a result, he and his bandmates John, Paul and George are chased from London to the Austrian Alps and the Bahamas by religious cult members, a mad scientist and the London police.In addition to starring the Beatles, ‘Help!’ has a witty script, a great cast of British character actors and features 7 classic Beatles tracks, including:

• ‘Help!’
• ‘You're Going To Lose That Girl’
• ‘You've Got To Hide Your Love Away’
• ‘Ticket To Ride’
• ‘I Need You’
• ‘The Night Before’
• ‘Another Girl’

The DVD will be a 2-disc set. Disc 1 will feature the original film digitally restored with a newly created 5.1 soundtrack, while Disc 2 contains an hour of extra features, including:

•The Beatles in Help! – 30 minute documentary about the making of the film with Richard Lester, the cast and crew. Includes exclusive behind the scenes footage of The Beatles on set.
•A Missing Scene – Featuring Wendy Richard
•The Restoration of Help! – An in depth look at the restoration process.
•Memories of Help! – The cast and crew reminisce
•Theatrical Trailers – 2 US trailers and 1 Spanish trailer.
•1965 US Radio Spots - Hidden in disc menus.
There will be 2 editions of the DVD - a standard digipack and a deluxe boxed set that will contain a reproduction of Richard Lester’s original annotated script, 8 lobby cards and a poster, plus a 60-page book with rarely seen photographs and production notes from the movie. Both the deluxe book and the standard booklet feature an introduction by Richard Lester and an appreciation by Martin Scorsese.

Mark Vidler as Go Home Productions is a master of the bootleg/mashup. For now though he has decided to put them to rest and focus on his remixing and other career endeavors. Fear not though, for he has just released this 20 song compilation of his work from 2002 to 2007 on his website as a free download. And if you like this, later this month he plans on giving it all away, 16 cds worth of mashups/bootlegs from his archives. Stay tuned.

It's a 5 year retrospective of GHP bootlegs.
20 tracks that include personal faves / tracks that have gone down well with the public and a fair few that have led to greater things..
I thought it would be a good idea to put this up now, as there are plenty of individual requests for many of them by folks who have just discovered GHP.
It's also a taster for the 'entire' GHP output being made available next month. Friday 21st September if all goes to plan. I've seen a few GHP torrents doing the rounds but they don't even begin to scratch the surface.I have at least 16 CD's worth. All remastered. Full artwork and a
fair amount of unreleased/unheard stuff.
...and of course it will put a lid on this particular GHP chapter.
'Bootlegs' have been fun but have become
less spontaneous for me in 2007. Mashed' was initially an exciting
project/prospect but 3 years took it's toll and really watered it down to the
laughing stock that it was. "Passenger Fever" was fucking cool though. The rest
dated back to 2004...hmmm.
Missed opportunity for all involved really and lessons have been learned by everyone.
I'll save the nitty-gritty for the autobiography...or a paragraph in the Observer Music Monthly.
So, the bootlegs will be taking very much a back-seat for now. Strapped in securely and
told not to move or ask 'are we there yet?'

Mentor Tormentor, Not Your Average Superhero

So I've been listening to Earlimart's Mentor Tormentor for a couple weeks now trying to figure out just how to describe it, but the more I listen to it the harder it becomes. After the first couple times through it seems easy, just put it in terms of who it sounds like, Elliott Smith, Fleetwood Mac, Aimee Mann, The Beatles, Midlake, Neil Young,etc. Well, it's all that and more, and the more I listen the more it becomes just Earlimart blending their influences into something at once familiar yet fresh without ever getting too derivative. From the slow piano based Happy Alone, to the revved up guitar rock of Everybody Knows Everybody, to the pure pop of Cold Cold Heaven, Mentor Tormentor is full of songs that slowly creep into your subconscius and stay there. And forget Peter, Bjorn, and John or Andrew Bird, Nothing Is True is hands down the best use of whistling in a song this year.

Mentor Tormentor was written and produced by Aaron Espinoza and Ariana Murray at The Ship, the band's studio in Eagle Rock, CA, and mixed by Dave Trumfio at Kingsize Soundlabs in Los Angeles. Recording in their own studio gave Espinoza, Ariana Murray and Joel Graves the luxury to write, record and shape Mentor Tormentor at their own pace, working with drummers Scott McPherson and Russell Pollard.

New Music : Bless 1

Former Bag Of Songs Artist Of The Day, Bless 1, is a hip hop artist/producer from the west side of Chicago with an incredible skill for lyrics and a sense of timing and rhyme that flow so well as to seem effortless. Bless was originally supposed to release his album Starving Artist back in June, but due to a hard drive crash the final mixes were lost. Never Give Up is one of the songs on there and he didn't give up. On Saturday September 1st, Starving Artist was released to the world, and to make sure everyone gets a chance to hear it, Bless 1 has made it available for free download on his myspace page.

It's a great record I've been anticipating for a while now and it delivers. Here's a couple songs to check out as well as link to the whole album.

Going To A Revival With John Fogerty

John Fogerty created some of enduring standards of rock and roll with his band Creedence Clearwater Revival Proud Mary, Who'll Stop The Rain, Fortunate Son to name but a few. While the years following the breakup of CCR also produced some great music, his early catalog remained the yardstick by which all his subsequent endeavors were measured.
Of his solo years John says:

“It just seemed like all the records I have made since Creedence Clearwater
Revival have all been sort of pushed off center,” he says. “I felt like I was
dancing around the outskirts of what is my true center. With this album, I
really wanted to stay on the mark, right in the middle, right where rock ‘n’
roll is. I wanted this one to be easier, a lot more fun than some of the past
records have been.”

Based on the few tracks I've heard so far, his new record is return to the sound that made him a legend and is destined to be another classic in the Fogerty canon. Even the name Revival points toward a return to his glory days in CCR.

LIVE: 08.30.07 A-Sides CD Release Party @ Johnny Brenda's

This past Thursday at Johnny Brenda's was another display of the amazing musical force that is currently swirling in Philadelphia. The A-Sides were celebrating the release of their brand new Vagrant Records CD Silver Storms (rls date 9/18/07) and brought The Capitol Years and Bitter Bitter Weeks along for the ride. It was a packed house for an all around astounding night of music kicked off with one of the best sets I've seen Bitter Bitter Weeks play yet. Capitol Years were up next, my first time seeing them and they were phenomenal, closing their set with a version of the George Harrison song Wah Wah including the addition of 7 or 8 special guests on stage to help out. Wow. Then came The A-Sides. I had seen the A-Sides play a somewhat disappointing set due to muddy sound problems a couple weeks back at the XPoNential Music Fest, but there were no problems Thursday night, and they delivered all I could have expected and more, encoring with a loose yet faithful version of Springsteen's Backstreets Here's some photos of the fun.

LIVE : Josh Ritter @ World Cafe Live 8.24.07

Just about a week ago I had a chance to catch Josh Ritter play as show for WXPN's Free At Noon series at the World Cafe Live in Philadelphia. It ended up being one of the best shows I've seen all year. Now, thanks to the magic of a friend who rocks, I have it to share with all of you today. This is the radio broadcast portion, Josh also came back out after it was off air and did a spine chilling rendition of Bruce Springsteen's The River as well as his own song Kathleen to cap off the afternoon.
