When you're playing in band, every once in a while you have one those nights where the planets just align or something and the songs you play end up a step beyond where you thought they would ever go. Those are the nights you remember the most. Here's a song from one of those nights, a blistering, set closing cover of Tom Waits Jockey Full Of Bourbon. Rock on.
I'll admit I'm somehwat chasing the bus on this one, as the new Iron and Wine album has been out for a couple months now yet somehow I managed to avoid hearing any of it until this past weekend. The dozen songs on The Shepherd's Dog are a fantastic blend of warm hypnotic percussion meshed with softly picked guitars and keyboards, all strung together masterfully by Sam Beam's vocals. Boy With A Coin is the first single from the album and I haven't been able to get it off repeat the past few days. The handclaps woven into the percussion give it such a spiritual mesmerizing feel that I just can't get enough of.
Clear Tigers is essentially a one man recording project of Arkansas native Nathan Akin. After spending some time studying with minimalist composer La Monte Young in New York, Nathan began work on his own songs. The end result was the Brutal album. Four of the songs were initally released in advance of the album on an EP on Catbird Records to much positive acclaim.

Bruce over at Some Velvet Blog posting about Neil Young's birthday earlier this week reminded me that I had this great rare track, a tribute to Neil by Brian Henneman of the Bottle Rockets sitting around waiting for a reason to post it. So here it is, Happy Belated Birthday Neil Young !
Up today a couple songs from the brand new Panda Riot album, She Dares All Things. Panda Riot's music is a swirling, melodic, just this side of noisy maelstrom of melodic guitars, keyboards, and drums, all woven together around the angelic soaring vocals of Rebecca Scott.
Looking back over the Monday Morning Blues posts I've been doing, I realized the women were getting shortchanged a bit in my selections. Today I'll even up the score a bit and let some of the lovely ladies of the blues serenade you this time around.
In honor of going to see Bob Mould play a sold out solo show tonight at John & Peter's in New Hope PA, a venue approximately the size of a living room, here's one of my all time favorite Bob Mould solo songs. It's only available on a compilation entitled No Alternative which was released 14 years ago this week. It was one of a series of albums released by The Red Hot Organization to help fun AIDS awareness groups. Bob also plays a show tomorrow night at World Cafe Live in Philadelphia which will include a screening of his new live DVD, Circle Of Friends.
It's always cool to receive a tip from a reader, so when I received what seemed like a sincere recommendation for the band Your 33 Black Angels I checked them out. Although that process diluted the perceived sincerity of tip when I discovered the exact same email went to every other blogger out there, some of whom even posted it.
For those of you observing Daylight Savings Time today, a couple songs to listen to while you set the clocks back an hour and change the batteries in those smoke detectors.
