The history:

On March 8th 1977 at 8.13am Eugene Francis Jnr emerged into our world,
for 2 reasons

a. to make music

b. so that ‘International Women’s Day’ would be officially recognised

9 months earlier it is believed that a chivalrous, Apache Indian made
love to an exquisite, Inuit Eskimo under the timid Welsh sun. The
couple were very much in love but also very much in hiding.

They travelled with Eugene from continent to continent, in search of
work and enlightenment. They were stubborn nomads, who in turn raised
an unshakable hippy…but their taste in music was impeccable

Eugene Francis was raised on Country, Blues and Folk Music, although
when he misbehaved his parents made him listen to 80’Synth-Pop or
Ambient.

After returning to London to study the stars and the planets at
University, Eugene Francis decided to capitalise on being in the
nation’s capital and got busy playing in as many different bands as
possible:

These bands were not important

Bored and fed up. Eugene Francis packed his little, junior guitar, and
some threads and headed off to America on a Kerouac. During a late
lock-in @ The White Horse Tavern (NYC) under the watchful eye of Dylan
Thomas. Eugene Francis was enlightened by a friend who told him to move
away from the pop-rock music he had been making and look for something
to call his own.

Up to the challenge Eugene Francis headed back home to the Welsh Hills
to start work.

Just like the construction of chitty-chitty-bang-bang, he disappeared
to work on his project behind locked doors. He emerged 4 months later
holding in his hand the proposed album ‘The Golden Beatle’ and the word
‘Folktronica’ would never be the same.

Now he needed a band, to reproduce the layers of instruments and
percussion…

Not just any old band, an elite band, a concept band: ‘The Juniors’

Drawing from some of the best bands / musical individuals of the
current Welsh Music Scene (Vito, Broken Leaf) Eugene Francis Jnr has
assembled a democracy, which he calls ‘a harmonious,
beatnik-supergroup’

And now they plan to take over the world, this one and the next

With Poor Me / Kites being the double A-side Ltd Edition Vinyl, due for
release in June and with the debut album nearing completion, this could
be the year where even the heavens will hear about ‘Eugene Francis Jnr
and the juniors’

So I headed out to Johnny Brenda's in Philadelphia on a beautiful Monday summer night mainly to see the amazing Blitzen Trapper and ended up seeing a full night of great music. First up was Shreveport, Louisiana's The Peekers, who turned out an inspired set of psyche-folk-indie rock somewhat similar to the sound of Park The Van label mates,Philly's own Dr Dog, and The Teeth.
Blitzen Trapper's country tinged explosion of sound, which they captured so well on their new record ,Wild Mountain Nation is even better live and should be on your do not miss list if they're coming to your town. Hot, hot, hot. Get out and see them even if it is a school night, you'll be glad you did.
Next up was my biggest surprise of the evening, David Vandervelde, an artist I knew absolutely zero about when I walked in the door came out and totally rocked the house with his glam rock meets power pop sound. Some of the the boys from Blitzen Trapper joined them for a number of songs adding additional guitar and vocals. I'm a believer.
Pick up their records and run, don't walk to see these bands if they appear in your 'hood.

Well the weather was absolutely perfect for this weekend's XPoNential Music Fest and I have to say I had an incredible time. Here's the amazing group of bands I caught sets by over Friday, Saturday,and Sunday:

The Fratellis, Earl Greyhound, Fountains of Wayne, Ruder Than You, Cracker, Switches, Bitter Bitter Weeks, G.Love Solo, Sam Roberts Band, Eastern Conference Champions, The A-Sides, Beretta 76, Martin Sexton, Kim Richey, The Cat Empire, Will Hoge, Illinois,Hoots & Hellmouth,The Swimmers,The Smithereens, Adrienne Young, Rhett Miller, Julian Velard, ALO

Three days of generally excellent music with especially great sets turned in by Sam Roberts Band,The Cat Empire and The Smithereens on the main stage, while Beretta 76,Earl Greyhound, The Swimmers, and Illinois really lit up the second stage.

The Switches took the award for best band I'd never hear of before, their catchy blend of Brit Pop was a pleasant surprise and a future must buy.

Philadelphia radio station WXPN is hosting their annual XPoNential music festival in Camden NJ this weekend, in Wiggins Park just across the Delaware River from Penn's Landing in Philadelphia. The Cribs release their third album today, the pop punk gem - Men's Needs, Women's Needs, Whatever. Produced by Alex Kapranos of Franz Ferdinand, it sounds like the infectious pop harmonies of Weezer combined with the unmistakable UK snarl of contemporaries like The Kaiser Chiefs or The Arctic Monkeys. If you're a fan of bands like Ride, Lush, Catherine Wheel or The Stone Roses you need to add Portland, Oregon's Saturna to your list. Their new album Some Delicious Enemy more than holds it's own against any of those band's releases. It's an incredibly infectious blend of massive sounding guitars and powerful drumming, topped with soaring, reverb soaked vocals as melodic as Oasis used to know how to write. Kim Richey's sophomore effort,the now classic Bitter Sweet, blended rock and roll and country into upbeat,catchy,instantly memorable songs and cemented her place as a songwriter to be reckoned with. Now, ten years and five albums later Kim has traded in most of the rock for a sound more reminiscient of artists like Aimee Mann or K.D. Lang on her current disc Chinese Boxes. Kim went to London and worked on the album with producer Giles Martin who recently co produced the Beatles Circque Du Soleil mash up Love with his father the esteemed Sir George Martin.
On Giles production Kim says:

“Giles is very musical, with a pop and classical background, He always comes up with the most beautiful parts. Everything he does is melodic and well placed. There’s never stuff put in just to take up space. “He was very focused on my voice and singing. That’s what he wanted the focal point of the record to be.”

Even though nine of the ten songs are co-writes with the likes of Mindy Smith, Katie Herzig, Tim Krekel and Joan Osborne the record is very consistent in feel and quality.From the aching melancholy of Drift to the jangly pop shimmer of I Will Follow to the silky smooth Pretty Picture it's Kim Richey through and through. Probably not a record you're going to reach for to try and liven up a party, but perfect for grabbing a glass of wine kicking back in your favorite comfy chair and just listening. Go ahead give it a try they don't make 'em like that anymore.
