Kim Richey's sophomore effort,the now classic Bitter Sweet, blended rock and roll and country into upbeat,catchy,instantly memorable songs and cemented her place as a songwriter to be reckoned with. Now, ten years and five albums later Kim has traded in most of the rock for a sound more reminiscient of artists like Aimee Mann or K.D. Lang on her current disc Chinese Boxes. Kim went to London and worked on the album with producer Giles Martin who recently co produced the Beatles Circque Du Soleil mash up Love with his father the esteemed Sir George Martin.
On Giles production Kim says:

“Giles is very musical, with a pop and classical background, He always comes up with the most beautiful parts. Everything he does is melodic and well placed. There’s never stuff put in just to take up space. “He was very focused on my voice and singing. That’s what he wanted the focal point of the record to be.”

Even though nine of the ten songs are co-writes with the likes of Mindy Smith, Katie Herzig, Tim Krekel and Joan Osborne the record is very consistent in feel and quality.From the aching melancholy of Drift to the jangly pop shimmer of I Will Follow to the silky smooth Pretty Picture it's Kim Richey through and through. Probably not a record you're going to reach for to try and liven up a party, but perfect for grabbing a glass of wine kicking back in your favorite comfy chair and just listening. Go ahead give it a try they don't make 'em like that anymore.
