A bit of a change up for you today, a sonic break from the bangs, bleeps and loud guitars, something new from the Portland Cello Project. PCP is an ensemble of cello players who has as much reverence for classical music as they do for classic rock, playing everything from Beethoven to Britney Spears and all points in between. Often collaborating with members of Portland's thriving music scene, their live performances can have upwards of 16 people on stage, what I'd have to call a cello orchestra I suppose.
Doug Jenkins, Portland Cello Project co-founder explains, "We strive to expose people to new music through the cello; support local musicians and give them the opportunity to work with an orchestral accompaniment; and to make Portland, Oregon the cello capital of the world, perhaps one day changing its name to Celloland."
Well I don't know about Portland becoming Celloland any time soon but they're making some mighty fine music. Their debut self titled disc hits stores on August 12th, here's an early taste for you.
